Inspiring leadership starts in elementary school with SES’ new second grade leadership team called, “Raider Reps.”
“We wanted to emphasize the ‘Be A Raider’ characteristics at our school,” library teacher Kelly Dodson said. “Our goal is to use this group as a way to show all elementary students these qualities by the example of these amazing second grade representatives. It is also a way to reward students who consistently exhibit how to ‘Be A Raider’ to others, as these students are chosen by their first grade teachers.”
Students as early as pre-kindergarten learn the ‘Be a Raider’ focus traits, which Counselor LeeAnn Hill began implementing last school year, are: Be Helpful, Be Honest, Be Kind, Be Positive, and Be Responsible. The second grade Raider Reps group is steered by Mrs. Dodson, Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Hill.
“These students were chosen by their first grade teachers at the end of the year because of the way they showed kindness, responsibility, helpfulness, honesty, and positivity,” Dodson said. “They do not apply. Teachers observe students all throughout the year for these leadership qualities.”
The team has show their talents for leadership at events throughout the year by assisting with campus events and projects.
“These students welcome parents and visitors to special events at our campus,” Dodson said. “They have decorated and filled bags, and delivered treats to teachers for Kindness Month. This group also helps lead games and dances at our Little Raider Pep Rallies.”
The group meets quarterly and plans for events around campus.
“I like getting to go to Raider Rep meetings and talk about stuff,” second grader Carter Harper said. “I like that we show kindness to other people.”
Dodson said that when new students enroll at SES, Raider Reps help welcome them. They have also participated in the Legacy Club luncheon by welcoming the group to campus.
“We get to have snacks and do things for people which is really fun,” second grader Madelyn Thompson said. “We get to write cards and stay after school to do activities.”
