The 2023-2024 school year will begin my 15th year at Sunnyvale I.S.D. and marks my 22st year in education. This year is also my 3rd year as the Assistant Principal at SMS.

I am a 2001 graduate of Texas A&M University-Commerce with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health Education, and I graduated in August 2018 with my Master of Education in Educational Administration and Leadership through Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

I have been married for 16 years to my husband, Reagan, and we have one son named Jake (14). Jake will be an 8th grader at Sunnyvale Middle School this year. During my first four years at SMS, I coached 8th grade girls, but since Jake started school at SISD, I stepped down from coaching to have more time with my family. I am still very passionate about coaching and will always be a coach at heart!!!

Before becoming a Sunnyvale Raider in 2009, I spent 7 years teaching and coaching at Lone Oak I.S.D. Throughout those 7 years, my teaching duties included elementary and middle school P.E., a character building class, middle school and high school health and 7th grade science. I was the varsity volleyball coach, assistant varsity girls' basketball coach and assistant varsity girls' track and field coach.

I look forward to another great year at Sunnyvale Middle School! GO RAIDERS!

The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following: 

• Dresses, skirts and shorts will be mid-thigh in length, both front and back, measured while standing. 

• Clothing with shoulder straps must be at least 2” in width, with standard arm holes. Tank tops, T-back tops, halter tops and spaghetti straps are not permitted. Exposure of a bare shoulder, bare back, and/or midriff is not permitted.

• Undergarments, such as bras and boxers, must not be visible. Cleavage must be covered. 

• Excessively tight, baggy, ripped, low-cut, revealing clothing, and/or pajamas are not permitted. Leggings must be covered with a top that reaches mid-thigh length. Pants should have no exposed skin above the mid-thigh level. 

• Students may not wear clothing or have visible tattoos, body art, or branding that displays vulgar, lewd, or obscene writing and may not wear emblems that advertise or depict tobacco, alcohol, drugs, substances prohibited by the code of conduct, sex, violence, weapons, or identify the student as a member of a gang.

• Hats, scarves, bandanas, hoods, and/or hair coverings are not to be worn on the head inside the building except under circumstances approved by the principal.

• For health and safety reasons, shoes must be worn at all times. Slippers, house shoes, taps, metal plates, cleats and/or wheels in shoes may not be worn at school. 

• Extreme hairstyles are prohibited. 

• Decorations on teeth, nose rings, eyebrow rings, tongue rings, gauges, or any type of body piercing are not permitted. Earrings and/or nose studs are permitted.

• Neatly trimmed facial hair is permitted at the high school level.

• Grooming or clothing that cause or are reasonably expected to cause a substantial disruption to the school environment, to include the orderly operation and conduct of the classroom or campus, or infringes on the rights of another student are not permitted.

   

All final decisions on the appropriateness of school dress and grooming will rest with the campus administrators. If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes loss of instructional time. Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

The following guidelines apply to all academic areas (except HS credit courses).

• Accurate and up-to-date grades shall be kept by each teacher with a minimum of 10 daily grades taken each quarter.

• There should be a minimum of 2 tests or equivalent assessments required each quarter.  This category does not include the semester exams.

Grading in all classes will be classified into TWO categories: daily/homework/quizzes and major/test grades. Grades will include, but are not limited to, in class assignments, homework, quizzes, STAAR practice exercises, class discussion, group work, participation, major exams, Unit Assessments, essays, research papers, book reports, presentations, and projects.

The following guidelines apply to all academic areas:

• Extra credit may be given at the discretion of the teacher.

• Upcoming tests or assignments that count as a test grade must be posted 1 week in advance.  

• Each grade level will do its best to coordinate together so that due dates and testing are not scheduled on the same day.

• Re-tests and Test Corrections are allowed for a maximum grade of 70. Students are allowed up to 1 week to schedule a time to re-test or make corrections. 

• 8th grade students will take final exams for only HS credit courses and will follow HS guidelines. Materials covered on each exam will be at the teacher’s discretion.

*Courses that receive high school credit will be graded according to the high school grading policy.
